Cassandra Clare's young adult paranormal series, "The Mortal Instruments," arrived in the literary world a few years ago and showed out!
I've been wanting to read "The Mortal Instruments" series for the longest. Even after the initial talk of the novels being adapted into a film and the film actually releasing; my interest in reading the books only increased.
The buzz around this series has been fire, as well. Surprisingly, the film version did not do well at the box office. I haven't seen the film, but, that was only due to the fact that I wanted to read the first book; prior to watching the film. The film grossed a little over $31 million dollars domestically and $59 million internationally.
The film stats will not deter me from reading the book, because simply; the movie isn't the book. A film interpretation of someone else's work, sometimes doesn't transfer quite as well onto the big screen.
In this case, I believe the marketing of the film was lackluster and unfortunately, the ticket sales reflected that.
Summer is almost over and I wanted to make sure I read at least book one in the series before summer ended. So with that being said...the first book in the series, "City of Bones," is this month's (August 2014) book of the month pick.
Folks, as always, happy reading!
Synopsis via Amazon:
When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder -- much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It's hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing -- not even a smear of blood -- to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?
This is Clary's first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It's also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk.
Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace's world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know...
Exotic and gritty, exhilarating and utterly gripping, Cassandra Clare's ferociously entertaining fantasy takes readers on a wild ride that they will never want to end.
Now while the August book of the month pick focuses on book one, "City of Bones," The Immortal Instruments series consists of six books. The additional titles include: City of Ashes, City of Glass, City of Fallen Angels, City of Lost Souls and City of Heavenly Fire.
