 photo e9002f88-09fe-4726-b442-bd816c2e99fa_zpstnskivoq.jpg

Folks, the month of December arrived with a quickness. Still enjoying my favorite time of the year. My birthday and Thanksgiving were both in November. This month of course is Christmas, but, I actually love the build up to Christmas. I adore everything about the holiday season. This also includes the weather, because I love fall/winter fashion.

As someone who also loves reading...the cold weather is like icing on the cake. It makes for a great recipe, concocted to lure readers to curl up with a good book, along with a cup of coffee, a mug of hot chocolate or a glass of wine.

Reading is an obvious joy that gets even better when you crack open a book or turn on your kindle and start devouring an excellent read of any genre. With that being said...ushering in a new month, comes with announcing a new book of the month installment.

The book of the month pick for December 2015 is a novel based on a very uniquely interesting plot dynamic. The novel, Hell House: Reality TV Drama by Brenda Hampton, is the first book in the Hell House series.

Hampton brings together several characters from her previous books. In this series, the author places them all in one house while filming a reality show. As one can imagine, based on the current popularity of reality shows, Hell House, creates a dilemma that will surely lead to drama and mayhem.

This month's selection sounds like a fun and entertaining read.

Grab or download a copy of Brenda Hampton's Hell House: Reality TV Drama [Book One] today.

As always...happy reading!

Synopsis:

In this ingenious novel that brings reality TV to the printed page, drama levels go through the roof as six outrageous characters fiercely compete to win $100,000.

The most controversial characters from Brenda Hampton’s bestselling novels come together in a house that could unite— or destroy—them all. Roc Dawson from Full Figured, Chase Jenkins from Don’t Even Go There, Sylvia McMillan from SLICK, Jada Mahoney from How Can I Be Down?, Jamal “Prince” Perkins from Street Soldier, and Jaylin Rogers from the Naughty Series attempt to put aside their overwhelming differences and calm their unique personalities.

Without supervision, though, anything could happen inside Hell House—especially when there’s $100,000 at stake. And these six cutthroat contestants are determined to have it all. Overflowing with drama, raunchiness, and manipulation, survival by any means necessary is their primary focus, but only those with tough skin will make it to the next round.

Who will be the last woman or man standing, and who will walk out, slamming the door behind them and screaming at the top of their lungs?

New Release: THE BAZAAR OF BAD DREAMS By Stephen King + GMA Interview

The master of horror released a new book earlier this week. Stephen King's novel of short stories titled 'The Bazaar of Bad Dreams' released on Tuesday.

As a Stephen King fan, I am simply thrilled a new Stephen King gem has been unearthed. 'The Bazaar of Bad Dreams' is destined to be yet another number one bestseller for King...which of course would be definitely well deserved.

Synopsis:

A master storyteller at his best—the O. Henry Prize winner Stephen King delivers a generous collection of stories, several of them brand-new, featuring revelatory autobiographical comments on when, why, and how he came to write (or rewrite) each story.

Since his first collection, Nightshift, published thirty-five years ago, Stephen King has dazzled readers with his genius as a writer of short fiction. In this new collection he assembles, for the first time, recent stories that have never been published in a book. He introduces each with a passage about its origins or his motivations for writing it.

There are thrilling connections between stories; themes of morality, the afterlife, guilt, what we would do differently if we could see into the future or correct the mistakes of the past. “Afterlife” is about a man who died of colon cancer and keeps reliving the same life, repeating his mistakes over and over again. Several stories feature characters at the end of life, revisiting their crimes and misdemeanors. Other stories address what happens when someone discovers that he has supernatural powers—the columnist who kills people by writing their obituaries in “Obits;” the old judge in “The Dune” who, as a boy, canoed to a deserted island and saw names written in the sand, the names of people who then died in freak accidents. In “Morality,” King looks at how a marriage and two lives fall apart after the wife and husband enter into what seems, at first, a devil’s pact they can win.

Magnificent, eerie, utterly compelling, these stories comprise one of King’s finest gifts to his constant reader—“I made them especially for you,” says King. “Feel free to examine them, but please be careful. The best of them have teeth.”

Book of the Month: (October 2015) - FORTY ACRES: A Thriller By Dwayne Alexander Smith

 photo 05e5f4aa-694b-441b-8d37-8064df4e48cd_zpsaammwgq7.jpg

Fall is here! October has arrived. So, of course the start of a new month means it is time for the exciting reveal of another book of the month pick.

I have to say, the book choice for October is a title I literally stumbled upon a little over a week ago. After getting pulled in by the synopsis, which tells of a fictional saga that is bold, intriguing, controversial...a spin on how one perceives race and slavery in America; through a suspenseful and mind blowing way.

Get ready for what I hope will end up being a fresh and brilliantly thrilling read.

The October 2015 book of the month selection is the novel, Forty Acres: A Thriller by Dwayne Alexander Smith.

I can't wait to delve into this today.

 As always...happy reading!

Synopsis:

A young black attorney confronts issues of race and power as he uncovers a shocking conspiracy in the most page-turning and provocative thriller since The Firm.

Martin Grey, a smart, talented black lawyer working out of a storefront in Queens, becomes friendly with a group of some of the most powerful, wealthy, and esteemed black men in America. He’s dazzled by what they’ve accomplished, and they seem to think he has the potential to be as successful as they are. They invite him for a weekend away from it all—no wives, no cell phones, no talk of business. But far from home and cut off from everyone he loves, he discovers a disturbing secret that challenges some of his deepest convictions…

Martin finds out that his glittering new friends are part of a secret society dedicated to the preservation of the institution of slavery—but this time around, the black men are called “Master.” Joining them seems to guarantee a future without limits; rebuking them almost certainly guarantees his death. Trapped inside a picture-perfect, make-believe world that is home to a frightening reality, Martin must find a way out that will allow him to stay alive without becoming the very thing he hates.

A novel of rage and compassion, good and evil, trust and betrayal, Forty Acres is the thought-provoking story of one man’s desperate attempt to escape the clutches of a terrifying new moral order.

Movie Trailer: GOOSEBUMPS In Theaters 10.16.15

Book of the Month: (September 2015) - AMERICANAH by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

 photo americanah_zpsv7ftxxx6.jpg

I'm excited about this month's book of the month pick. September's choice is by an author who has become one of my favorite literary storytellers. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's novel, Americanah, is the book pick for September.

Adichie's phenomenal novel, Half of a Yellow Sun, was a previous book of the month pick back in December 2013. Half of a Yellow Sun was an exceptional read. The gift of creating dynamic characters, visual landscapes, saga filled prose written beautifully, quickly catapults Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's books, in my opinion, to classic reads.

Americanah will surely turn out to be another fantastic story that tackles serious issues in a way...that through humor, honesty and rose colored glasses that are ripped away... shed light on reality through a fictional tale that folks should immediately add to their TBR lists.

As always...happy reading.

Synopsis:
One of The New York Times's Ten Best Books of the Year Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction

A powerful, tender story of race and identity by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the award-winning author of Half of a Yellow Sun.

Ifemelu and Obinze are young and in love when they depart military-ruled Nigeria for the West. Beautiful, self-assured Ifemelu heads for America, where despite her academic success, she is forced to grapple with what it means to be black for the first time. Quiet, thoughtful Obinze had hoped to join her, but with post-9/11 America closed to him, he instead plunges into a dangerous, undocumented life in London.

Fifteen years later, they reunite in a newly democratic Nigeria, and reignite their passion—for each other and for their homeland.

HALF of a YELLOW SUN was adapted into a film starring Chiwetel Eiofor and Thandie Newton. Add the movie to your collection.

Book of Month: [August 2015] - AN EMBER IN THE ASHES By Sabaa Tahir

 photo emberintheashes_zps4g2a4loh.jpg

The book of the month pick for August, is a novel I'm extremely hyped and excited about. First of all, the cover is absolutely gorgeous. You might want to purchase the hardcover edition to experience the full effect of how breathtaking the cover is.

I have been hearing such great things about, An Ember in the Ashes, the debut novel by Sabaa Tahir. This is a young adult, sci-fi fantasy that promises to be filled with a dark combustible combination of action, adventure, betrayal, sacrifice, romance and the revelation of what one will do for the ones they love and the lengths the human spirit will go to break free from the ties that bind.

I can't wait to begin reading this month's selection, An Ember in the Ashes, by Sabaa Tahir.

Grab you a copy and as always...happy reading!

F.Y.I: An Ember in the Ashes 2 is expected to release April 26, 2016.

Synopsis:

Laia is a slave. Elias is a soldier. Neither is free.

Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.

It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

Book Review: THRIVE By Arianna Huffington

 photo THRIVE_zps9pkzvayv.jpg

Arianna Huffington’s book, Thrive, put things in perspective, as far as how we choose to view success. Understanding sacrifices are part of the path that lead us to the dreams we want to see come into fruition. However it is just as important not to allow your drive to wreak havoc on other crucial and vital areas in your life. Huffington’s Thrive, allows the reader to fully absorb the concept, or rather the message, being relayed. It is essential to live your life in a fulfilling and successfully satisfying way. While many fail to grasp what it really means to be successful in life, due to the various levels of what folks feel defines success, it is possible to live your dreams and achieve them triumphantly, without sacrificing your family, health and well-being.

This is definitely a book I recommend to folks striving to attain and reach their goals and those already there, yet are neglecting other areas in their lives that are just as important and key in the definitive quest in what stipulates success.

Thrive is a bookshelf must.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review from the publisher.

I cannot wait to see this movie. The entire trailer was epic...but the last clip in the trailer was absolutely crazy EPIC!

Book of the Month: [July 2015] - THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN By Paula Hawkins

 photo 3a3f166c-97de-464e-86c0-ee0d9f1ce893_zpsromofdfh.jpg

The book of the month choice for this month is a doozy. I've heard many things, both good and bad...mostly good, about Paula Hawkin's bestselling debut novel, The Girl on the Train. This suspense filled thriller is a story about a girl who becomes engrossed in a couple she sees every day while riding the train. In a astounding turn of events, all is not what it seems or is it?

The simplicity of the plot idea is actually an excellent play of words that were enough for me to immediately purchase the book. Even more so intrigued...I chose it as the July 2015 book of the month pick. I love a good mystery thriller, and so far this book delivers. However, full disclosure...any book or film that has a comparison uttered of the likes of the iconic style of Alfred Hitchcock, is an automatic watch or read for me.

I'm currently in the middle of reading this month's pick and can't wait to find out the upcoming twists and turns that are surely just pages away.

Paula Hawkins's debut novel is a compelling concoction of interesting characters, careening down a ghastly path that adds up to one hell of a crazy good read and hopefully a brilliant end.

You know what to do...order a copy of the July book of month pick and as always...happy reading!

Synopsis:
The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives.

Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. “Jess and Jason,” she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost. And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed.

Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?

Compulsively readable, The Girl on the Train is an emotionally immersive, Hitchcockian thriller and an electrifying debut.

Book of the Month: [June 2015] - I'VE GOT YOUR NUMBER By Sophie Kinsella

 photo ivegotyournumber1_zpsl5yhegjd.jpg

It's that time again...that's right...the book of the month rec is upon us. This month's pick is by an author who knows how to churn out hilarious romantic reads. Sophie Kinsella is a New York Times bestselling author with numerous unforgettable stories with unique and quirky characters.

Sophie Kinsella's popular Confessions of a Shopaholic series is one of my faves...well I've actually only read the first two novels in the series...however I do plan on reading the entire series at some point. I also read Kinsella's The Undomestic Goddess, years ago, which was a hilarious page turner.

Interesting to note, Confessions of a Shopaholic was also a movie. I simply did not like the movie. It did not have the same dynamic as the book.

Anywho,..the book of the month choice for June is I've Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella. The synopsis screams romantic hilarity, which in my book...automatically means a great summer read awaits. So, folks...get your read on.

As always...happy reading!

Synopsis:
Poppy Wyatt has never felt luckier. She is about to marry her ideal man, Magnus Tavish, but in one afternoon her “happily ever after” begins to fall apart. Not only has she lost her engagement ring in a hotel fire drill, but in the panic that follows, her phone is stolen. As she paces shakily around the lobby, she spots an abandoned phone in a trash can. Finders keepers! Now she can leave a number for the hotel to contact her when they find her ring. Perfect!

Well, perfect except that the phone’s owner, businessman Sam Roxton, doesn’t agree. He wants his phone back and doesn’t appreciate Poppy reading his messages and wading into his personal life.

What ensues is a hilarious and unpredictable turn of events as Poppy and Sam increasingly upend each other’s lives through emails and text messages. As Poppy juggles wedding preparations, mysterious phone calls, and hiding her left hand from Magnus and his parents, she soon realizes that she is in for the biggest surprise of her life.

New Release: FINDERS KEEPERS by Stephen King Available Now

 photo 27023676-f58d-44a0-825e-ffa7e659ca3a_zpskl3owvos.jpg

Stephen King has crafted a new work of genius. The master of horror released Finders Keepers, the sequel to his number one best-seller, Mr. Mercedes.

Finders Keepers hit bookshelves, both tangible and virtual, earlier this week on Tuesday. Be sure to order your copy soon.

While I have already purchased this sure fire must read, I don't know when I will be able to crack it open. I will definitely read it after the current three books I'm dying to read and the book of the month pick for June, that will be posted on the blog today.

As always...happy reading!

Synopsis via Amazon:
A masterful, intensely suspenseful novel about a reader whose obsession with a reclusive writer goes far too far—a book about the power of storytelling, starring the same trio of unlikely and winning heroes King introduced in Mr. Mercedes.

“Wake up, genius.” So begins King’s instantly riveting story about a vengeful reader. The genius is John Rothstein, an iconic author who created a famous character, Jimmy Gold, but who hasn’t published a book for decades. Morris Bellamy is livid, not just because Rothstein has stopped providing books, but because the nonconformist Jimmy Gold has sold out for a career in advertising. Morris kills Rothstein and empties his safe of cash, yes, but the real treasure is a trove of notebooks containing at least one more Gold novel.

Morris hides the money and the notebooks, and then he is locked away for another crime. Decades later, a boy named Pete Saubers finds the treasure, and now it is Pete and his family that Bill Hodges, Holly Gibney, and Jerome Robinson must rescue from the ever-more deranged and vengeful Morris when he’s released from prison after thirty-five years.

Not since Misery has King played with the notion of a reader whose obsession with a writer gets dangerous. Finders Keepers is spectacular, heart-pounding suspense, but it is also King writing about how literature shapes a life—for good, for bad, forever..

I initially purchased this book simply because my name is Tori and I loved the synopsis. I had to purchase it. With that being said, Taming Tori was a fun read. I recently realized I forgot to blog about this particular book...which was one hell of an amazing read. I actually wrote a review on Goodreads when I finished it, but forgot to blog about it. I don't even want to call RUINED by S.K. Lessly, JUST a romance novel. It's so much more.

The supporting characters, the friendships, the drama, the intense chemistry between the main characters and even the time span that evolves around this couple creates a story that will literally leave you captivated by the words jumping off the page. The writing flow that is that of S.K. Lessly will pull you in instantly. You will laugh, tear up, get angry and through it all...when you reach the end...you will crave even more of the story.

Book Review: THE BOOK Of JOAN: Tales of Mirth, Mischief, and Manipulation By Melissa Rivers

 photo e2571053-40f5-4011-aae8-0fd763d92449_zpsv5kq7msu.jpg

The Book of Joan: Tales of Mirth, Mischief, and Manipulation by Melissa Rivers is a loving celebration, remembrance and gift, in print, for a beloved mother, from her daughter….

The Book of Joan by Melissa Rivers was an emotional, unforgettable and humorous read. I knew from the start reading the book’s dedication, which read, For my Mother, whom I think about every day, and for my Father, who, as of this past September, is no longer resting in peace, that Melissa Rivers had inherited her mother’s witty humor and the story reflecting her mother’s life and the lessons from which she learned from her, were going to be at times difficult to read and other times laugh out loud funny.

The flow of the story written by Melissa was very forthcoming. She shared private conversations she’d had with her mom, including personal advice, Joan’s unrelentless determination to see Melissa married to a doctor (or rather just getting married), her life growing up with a famous mom and the life-long fascination Joan had with looks and cosmetic surgery. The Book of Joan: Tales of Mirth, Mischief, and Manipulation doesn’t hold back from acknowledging why Joan felt the way she did about her looks and as a reader, you begin to understand her thought process. However, as Melissa reveals in the book, on her eightieth birthday, Joan Rivers told her daughter, “You know what? For eighty, I don’t look so bad.” From Melissa’s view, she felt her Mom had finally blossomed (in Joan’s mind) from an ugly duckling into a swan. Of course like with any facet in her life, Joan was able to find humor in anything, including an insecurity that had haunted her from a very early age.

What stood out to me and was confirmed after reading this book was the fact that what you saw was what you got from Joan Rivers. Point blank and the period. Joan Rivers never let her age deter her from just being who she was…bold, provocative, audacious, talented and hilarious as hell. While everyone wasn’t amused by Joan River’s brash style of humor, she never backed down from her opinions, beliefs or art. That truly defines an artist and a trailblazer.

With The Book of Joan: Tales of Mirth, Mischief, and Manipulation, Melissa Rivers wrote a nearly 300 page open letter to her Mommy and let the world in on the love.

When you begin the journey of this must read memoir, written by the only person who knew Joan best, the opening lines from Melissa Rivers in The Book of Joan, makes you tear up and smile at the same time…

An excerpt from The Book of Joan:

I never thought I’d be sitting in a hospital making a decision about turning off a ventilator. I guess in my head I knew it was a possibility, as we all know we may face that kind of decision for a loved one someday. I just didn’t know I’d have to make it so unexpectedly. Just last night my mother and I were on the phone, laughing and joking about an old friend she’d run into. It was a typical checking-in-with-each-other kind of call. I had no way of knowing that it would be our last conversation.

What I wanted was for her to sit up and say, “Ooh, that was nice nap. What time is hair and makeup?” What I needed was five minutes so I could tell hear all the crazy, hilarious things that had gone on around her the last week. We were probably the only two people in Mount Sinai who would’ve seen the humor in all this madness. But since I didn’t get those five minutes…

In our family we always laughed our way through pain, so I decided to write a book that would have made her laugh. At least once a day she used to turn to me and say, “Can you believe this shit?” And I’d day, “Yes, Mommy, I can.”

Mommy, I hope you’re somewhere reading-and, God knows, editing-this book, but the thing I hope most of all is that you’re smiling.

From that beginning…set the tone of this truly touching read that was filled with emotional reflection, trials and tribulations, lessons taught and learned, humor and most of all love.

Book of the Month: [May 2015] - OBSIDIAN [Lux Series # 1] By Jennifer L. Armentrout

 photo fd96d60b-749a-4f43-8924-b947a2e2734c_zps19easlni.jpg

I'm so excited for the book pick for the month of May. I have been putting off starting this series for a minute and the anticipation from all of the good reviews has had me highly ready to do so, and so I felt the time is now.  With that being said...the book of the month choice for May 2015 is 'Obsidian' by Jennifer L. Armentrout.

'Obsidian' is the first novel in the Lux Series, which consists of five novels and a prequel that is a  novella. 'Obsidian' is centered around the much talked about duo, Katy and Daemon. One of the interesting aspects of the Lux series is the dynamic between the main characters of course...however, throw in the alien and paranormal dimensions to the story and you definitely have me ready to delve into the fantasy world that is the Lux series.

On the book to screen front, a film version of 'Obsidian' is in the works.

As always...happy reading!

Start the Lux series today! Amazon link for 'Obsidian' listed below.

 Synopsis via Amazon:
Starting over sucks. When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes.

Things were looking up.And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something…unexpected happens. The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don't kill him first, that is.

The Lux Series consists of the following titles in order:

OBSIDIAN - Book One

ONYX - Book Two

OPAL - Book Three

ORIGIN - Book Four

OPPOSITION - Book Five

SHADOWS - A PREQUEL (Novella)

Book of the Month: [March 2015] - THE FAULT IN OUR STARS By John Green

 photo 81db425f-a5df-40d0-88fc-1b53a36bf10e_zps6g49pmmp.png

The book of the month pick for March is the wildly popular novel 'The Fault in Our Stars' by John Green. I have anticipated, yet put off reading this novel for some time. Not because I didn't think it would be interesting or good...but because I knew it was going to be an emotional and heavy read, with some bright spots thrown in...of course.

So, while I knew I was going to eventually choose this title as a book of the month choice, I just didn't know when that was going to be. Well that time is now.

The film adaption released last year and was a smash hit. I also put off watching the film as well. I wanted to read the book first. I've heard many good things about 'The Fault in Our Stars' and look forward to beginning one journey of a read.

As always...happy reading!

Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. Insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw, The Fault in Our Stars is award-winning-author John Green’s most ambitious and heartbreaking work yet, brilliantly exploring the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love.

 photo 20e01182-69e6-4d4d-8eee-488f7a1772e1_zpsygfpgdpa.png

I'm hyped about the book of the month choice for February. I've heard nothing but good things about this series and the reviews have been stellar. The February 2015 book of the month pick is the novel The Selection, by Kiera Cass.

The Selection is a story about a girl named America. Set in a dystopian period, America is about to enter into a world that she really doesn't care to be a part of. This is a story about the journey America embarks on; that thrusts her into the competitive "selection" process that will decide who will win the heart of Prince Maxon. Sounds a bit interesting...especially given the dystopian vibe. Can't wait to find out what happens.

The Selection series currently consists of four books and three novellas.

THE SELECTION - Book One

The Prince - Book One Novella

THE ELITE  - Book Two

The Guard - Book Two Novella

 photo 20739be0-0ba9-4788-b6a3-4ee607aa1bb9_zps82b418be.png

The book of the month pick for January, 'The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer,' is a dark young adult paranormal psychological thriller that I've heard great things about.

While this is the debut novel from Michelle Hodkin, I have anticipated reading this new trilogy based on the simmering buzz the novels are getting and the riveting character and plot dynamic that does nothing but create a threshold of suspense and dares a reader to unearth this creepy, yet; romantic tale.

As always...happy reading!
